Review: Amathus Beach Hotel Paphos

The Amathus Beach Hotel, Paphos, is located on the main tourist road and is about 15 minutes walk to the harbor and the old castle, where you will find a number of souvenir shops, ice cream parlors and a variety of restaurants offering local and international cuisines . As a 5 star hotel, it offers all the services and conveniences you would expect, and I do have to say it scores highly compared to similarly priced/ranked hotels in Cyprus.

The reception staff were very professional and our check in was very swift and hassle free. There was none of the in-your-face, over-the-top and lengthy procedure that I have experienced in some hotels in Cyprus – during a recent stay in one Protaras hotel, the receptionist even curtsied after informing us of all the hotels services and polices in an over practiced manner, which was a little bizarre, to say the least! Yet, at the Amathus, the receptionist managed to inform us of their special offers and facilities relevant to our particular circumstances. Seeing as I was traveling with 2 children, he informed us of a ‘kids eat free’ lunchtime special. And on our last day, reception called the room to ask what time we would be departing and if it was after the standard check out time, he would arrange for a free late check out. While a late check out wasn’t necessary on this occasion, it was a nice touch, which I have not experienced at any other hotel during the busy summer period.

One drawback is that the room was a little dated in it’s décor. We stayed in a ground floor inland view room with a cute little courtyard, in place of a balcony. The sofa bed wasn’t the most comfortable – not that either of the kids complained – and the bathroom could do with some updating. However, I did have a peak at a more expensive sea view room and it looked like it was recently updated.

The positives of staying in a non-sea view room, however, is that it was very quiet and I could happily work while sitting outside. The ample size of the room and the little extras, like the child sized bathroom slippers and kid’s juices with the complimentary fruit and wine, made for a very pleasant stay.

The sun loungers issue is definitely one which needs to be addressed. At 9am all the loungers were taken and I had to be content with one between the 3 of us, which was placed in the middle of a walk way. At 10:30 am many were still reserved, but not in use. And it seems that while the hotel has a dedicated ‘families area’ near the baby pool and shallow end of the main pool, any guest can use these, and indeed can reserve them by placing their towel on them, hours before they plan to actually visit the pool. Perhaps, the hotel will consider a system of assigning sun loungers on arrival for the each guest’s entire stay.

The breakfast was delicious, as expected, with a huge variety to suit every appetite. And the waiters are happy to provide Frappe, or other alternatives not available on the breakfast buffet. Service was quick and the food of an excellent quality. It is definitely something to look forward to each morning.

The room rate also compares very well, and may indeed be less than some of the more popular 4 star hotels in the area, although be prepared for the cost of extras, if you will be charging food and drinks to your room. Your check-out bill can be higher than the cost of the accommodation!

The quest for cheap flights

Having worked in travel for about a million years, I have seen the industry gradually transform, from a thriving, fun and well paid sector, to a miserly industry dominated by call centres and unenthusiastic agents. For me, being a travel agent meant countless discounted travel opportunities, free upgrades and excess luggage – all I had to do was tell the counter clerk that I was a travel agent with such and such, and in more cases than not, I would get an upgrade and a free pass to the VIP lounge. A lot of these extras were extended to regular travellers too, who could additionally enjoy flexible tickets at a reasonable cost, which included drinks and meals on all flights, and they had the luxury of being able to reserve their seat prior to check in.

Nowadays, things have changed. Rising fuel costs, high airport taxes, the emergence of budget carriers and a global recession, has forced major airlines to keep a tighter rein on their profit margins. They have stopped paying travel agents commission and have introduced highly restricted tickets without luggage allowance, in attempting to lower the costs and compete with their no frills counterparts. Code share flights and inter-airline alliances are all part of the same initiative to keep expenditure to a minimum, while maintaining a foothold in the market. As a result, the options for travellers have increased. But so have the challenges in locating the best deal, since booking your flights is no longer a case of visiting a one-stop-shop.

There are a number of opportunities available to the budget conscious traveller. Below I have listed some general information to consider when conducting your search. Some of these are pretty obvious – “have flexible dates” – while others will only be known to those working in the industry or who otherwise have insider knowledge.

First off – be flexible! Yes, that’s right – certain dates are busier and so the lower fares are already taken up. If you have a few days to play with, it can reduce the cost of your ticket by a significant amount. For example, currently a one-way ticket from London Heathrow to Nice on 1 August 2013, is selling at EUR252, but the same flight a day earlier costs EUR182. This logic applies to avoiding high season – in August, European flights generally cost more. School holidays are busier periods, and sometimes, even weekend flights, particularly when it’s a bank holiday and a lot of people want to get away for the 3 day weekend.

If you are in a position to confirm your travel dates in advance, then take advantage of early saver fares. These are available to those who book a certain number of days/weeks prior to departure. Conversely, last minute deals can also save you money, but will leave you with far less choices and can be risky. This is best attempted with the help of a travel agent, who can monitor the flight and advice on your chances of getting a better fare or not.

It pays to choose your destination carefully. Do some research to see if there are any major events happening at the time you plan to be there. Trying to find a cheap flight to Rio during Carnival, is really a fruitless endeavour. But in some cases, by simply choosing an alternative airport, say, Newark instead of JFK, can make a big difference to the cost.

When searching for flights online, don’t just rely on Skyscanner or other fare comparison site. These websites get paid commission by the airlines they list and so will not include airlines and routes which they do not make money on. Look at individual airline websites. And search the net for low cost, lesser known, regional airlines. I regularly come across airlines I have never before encountered and I book dozens of tickets each day.

In addition to the various online booking tools available, seeking the assistance of travel agent can help you save money and spare you a lot of hassle. Good travel agents have expert knowledge of destinations, airline routes and fare rules. They can tell you if booking a return fare will work out cheaper than 2 one way tickets and they can combine airlines and fares such a way that can save you money. For instance, a route involving different airlines can sometimes be split in to 2 or even 3 separate tickets and cost less than issuing one ticket for the whole route. They can also advise you on things like fare rules, penalties for cancelations and changes and the most appropriate fare available for your particular needs.

Additionally, many travel agents have access to contact or private fares which are unavailable to the public. Consolidated fares are quite a complex subject, which I hope to cover in a future post, but the main point to note is that it’s possible to get such a – albeit, highly restricted – ticket for up to 50% less than what you would find it if you were to book direct with the airline.

Not all travel agents are experts and certainly not all agencies have access to contract rates, but if you find a good agent with the relevant skills and knowledge, it’s worth building a relationship with them. Once the know you and your requirements, they will be better able to advise you and they can keep you up to date on special offers you may not want to miss.

A couple of years ago, I helped plan a 6 week overland Africa trip for someone. He was travelling from S. Africa via Zambia, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Kenya and finally to Ethiopia. It was a pretty tight schedule, in terms of the places he wanted to visit along the way and it required a lot of careful planning, also due to the safety aspect of a first time visitor travelling alone through these countries.

During my research I came across the Man in Seat Sixty-One , which helped immensely in planning the route. It is packed full of up-to-date information and advice on travelling by rail through all corners of the world.

I live and work in Cyprus, and I claim to know the Island fairly well. So I thought it would be a good point to start a destination feature. But that’s not the only reason to begin here – Cyprus is an island steeped in history and culture with a countless sites to see and cultural treasures to experience. Yet it has all the potential for a relaxing beach resort holiday, for those less inclined towards cultural exploration and adventure. In this article, I have put together some general facts about Cyprus’s history and some information on what to do or see, drawn from my own experience. Unfortunately, I can only cover a small percentage of what Cyprus offers in this article, but I hope it will nonetheless offer some useful information for those considering a visit.

Cyprus is the third largest island of the Mediterranean, after Sicily and Sardinia, and it is located south of Turkey and to the north west of Lebanon and Israel. Recorded human activity on the island dates back to the New Stone age and archaeological remains of a well preserved Neolithic village can be found in a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Choirokoitia, situated near the southern coast of the island.

It is beyond the scope of this article to detail the numerous historical and cultural points of interest in Cyprus, but among its most important historical treasures, are the remains of the ancient city of Kourion, which lies just outside the city of Limassol and dates back to 4500-3900 BC. Here you can visit the remains of a 3rd century Roman Agora (market), the remains of the roman villa, The House of Achilles and the magnificent Greco-Roman Theatre, with its breath-taking views of the cost and remarkably well preserved mosaics. Kourion Theatre, is a site not to be missed – now fully restored, it is now used to stage musical and theatrical performances, as well as official events such as the opening ceremony of Cyprus assuming the rotating EU presidency in July 2011.

The capital of Nicosia, is frequently overlooked, boasts many cultural attractions, including the Venetian Walls built around the old town, Ledra street, the Cyprus Museum and the Ledra Palace Crossing, which is the only pedestrian access to the occupied north of the Island.

For those looking to enjoy a leisurely beach holiday without too much sightseeing, Cyprus again rates as an ideal destination. The major costal resorts of Paphos, Limassol, Larnaca, Ayia Napa and Protaras, offer accommodation options to suit every budget. The most luxurious resorts can be found in Paphos and the surrounding areas on the west side of the island. While there is a lively bar and club scene, Paphos tends to attract a lot of families and mature travellers and those looking to play golf.

The eastern resort of Ayia Napa, on the other hand, is where the majority of the island’s partying happens. By night the square with its many restaurant and clubs, bustles with activity until the early (or sometimes late) hours of the morning. By day, you will find the beaches busy with sun worshipers or tourists enjoying the many water sports available. It should be said that Ayia Napa boasts some of the best beaches on the island. Nissi beach, with its golden sand and clear waters, is probably the most popular beach, especially among young people and consequently gets very busy during the summer months. For those looking for a less hectic beach experience, Sandy Bay and Konnos Bay, which is also popular with locals, are probably the most obvious alternatives.

Cyprus has endured a troubled political past, which is far too complex to account for in this article, but, here is a brief history of the different periods of foreign occupations, up to the 1974 Turkish invasion and subsequent illegal occupation and resulting division of the Island which remains today.

Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Lusignans, Genoese, Venetians, Ottomans, the British and Turks have all sought to possess Cyprus at some point since around 330 BC, when Alexander the Great seized Cyprus from the hands of the Persians. Upon Alexander’s death, Cyprus became a colony of Ptolemy I and remained under Ptolemaic rule for the next 250 years. The Roman Empire was the next to annex Cyprus and aside from a brief period where it was gifted to Cleopatra of Egypt and then handed back to the Roman Empire. Aside from two destructive earthquakes, in 15 BC and 76 AD, Cyprus managed to enjoy prosperity and relative peace until the middle of the 7th century when the Arab raids began, with the destruction of Salamis and Kourion, forcing many costal settlers to move inland to avoid the repeated attacks.

Richard I is the next conqueror of Cyprus, who sells the island to the Knights Templer. They in turn are forced to sell it to Guy de Lusignan, the dispossessed King of Jerusalem, in 1192 and again Cyprus is allowed to prosper, with Famagusta on the east coast, rising to the position of one of the richest cities of the Near East region.

1489 brought the Venetians, who fearing an attack from the expanding Ottoman Empire, fortified the capital Nicosia with a circular wall complex. This impressive example of 16th century military architecture can still be seen today and divides the old (walled) town of Nicosia from the more recently established districts of the city.

Alas, the Venetian efforts to protect the city failed and Nicosia fell to the Ottomans in 1570 following a seven week siege. The slaughter of some 20,000 people ensued, before the Ottomans proceeded to take the last city remaining in Venetian hands, Famagusta, after an 11 month long campaign, by which time the death toll rose to 56,000. With Cyprus now under Ottoman rule, the Latin Church representatives are expelled or converted to Islam and the Greek Orthodox faith is restored under the Archbishop of Cyprus.

When the Greek War of Independence broke out, in 1921, however, the Archbishop Kyprianos was publicly executed in the walled city, together with 3 Bishops and 470 prominent Cypriots.

In 1878, the British assume administration of Cyprus and formally annex the Island in 1914, when the Ottomans enter the Great War on the side of Germany. The Treaty of Lausanne sees Cyprus officially declared a Crown colony. Hopes of the Cypriots eventually being granted self-determination are crushed, however, in the post WWII period, since Cyprus is considered a strategic asset by the British. Numerous attempts to find a peaceful solution to the problem fail and eventually an armed anti-colonial struggle for independence begins. The nationalist organisation EOKA’s official military campaign began in 1955 with simultaneous attacks on British controlled establishments, including Cyprus Broadcasting Station in Nicosia and the British Army’s Wolseley barracks. These were followed by a number of sabotage campaigns, military ambushes and the assassination of British soldiers. The struggle lasted until 1959 and in 1960 Cyprus was granted independence, with the exception of 2 Sovereign bases, Dekelia and Akrotiri, which remain until present under British control.

The 1960 Constitution of the Cyprus Republic and its many provisions, however, proved unworkable and acted as the basis for further conflict between Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities, eventually leading to the 1974 invasion of Turkey and subsequent illegal annexation of 37% of the island. The continued occupation and numerous human rights violations by Turkey, has been condemned by the UN General Assembly and the Council of Europe, among other bodies. Yet after the fall of the Berlin Wall, Nicosia remains today the only divided city in the world. The events of 1974 and repeated attempts to find a solution to the Cyprus Problem, continue to dominate the country’s politics.

Despite this troubled past, Cyprus managed to flourish economically, mostly due to a tourism industry which attracts an average of 2,400,00 visitors each year. In 2004 it joined the European Union and subsequently the Eurozone in 2008. The self-proclaimed Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, following the rejection of the 2004 UN Referendum by Greek Cypriots, on settling the dispute and owing to its status as a Turkish occupied territory – it is recognised as a state only by Turkey - is viewed as legally a part of EU that is under military occupation.

Unfortunately, the Cypriot economy was hugely affected by the 2012 banking crisis, which led the Cypriot government to seek a €10 billion bailout loan form the EU. The deal was reached following the Cyprus Government’s agreement to restructure the country’s 2 failing banks, while imposing a one off bank deposit levy on these bank’s customers on savings over €100,000. Cyprus is the 5th EU state, following Greece, Ireland, Portugal and Spain, to seek financial assistance and suffer austerity measures as a result. Positively, early indications are that the tourism industry has not been affected to the point that was feared, while the crisis has had devastating effects on the construction and property sector of the Island.

For Cypriots, the future currently remains uncertain. But for its visitors Cyprus remains an enchanting island, full of cultural treasures, glorious beaches and areas of unspoilt beauty, waiting to be discovered.

Briefly: best and worst airlines when flying to the USA

I often receive airline feedback from clients – on comfort, quality of food and service. Here is a brief review of a few of the airlines flying to the USA.

The information is mostly compiled from reviews of travelers, flying economy on direct routes to/from JFK and LAX and major European, Asian, Middle Eastern and Australian airports.

United Airlines comes up frequently as very disappointing – aside from many delays, by far exceeding those reported on other airlines, the seating is cramped (as is the case with the majority of US airlines) the in-flight entertainment is poor and the service, as one client summarised, “is rubbish”.

On the plus side, it’s relatively inexpensive to upgrade to the next class on US carriers, and plenty of travellers choose United, Delta or American Airlines over their European counterparts, for this reason alone.

British Airways, Air New Zealand and Virgin Australia get consistently good comments on service, comfort, entertainment and catering. As does Singapore Airlines and Qatar Airways.

Best of the bunch are Air Canada with excellent service and professional crew and, somewhat surprisingly, China Southern Airlines – again with excellent service, food and new aircraft.

Tips for Hassle Free Air Travel

I’m not a big fan of flying. Each time I board a plane, I’m convinced that it will be my last. I imagine the plane crashing on to the side of a mountain/suddenly falling from the sky/inexplicably exploding mid-air. Yet these irrational thoughts never stopped me from flying. I even worked as a flight attendant briefly (a long time ago – worst job ever), just to experience the rush of take-off and the feeling I was going somewhere; anywhere.

Airlines are the most common mode of international transport, being the fastest, most convenient, and, yes, the safest. But air travel can also be very stressful for some. Good planning and organization are the keys to a hassle free journey and avoiding some of the more common headaches associated with flying. So here are some things to remember when you’re planning your next trip.

  1. Study the flight itinerary

Your travel agent or airline may neglect to tell you that the ‘direct’ flight you booked will be touching down at another airport, en-route to your chosen destination. In many cases this will add delays to your schedule, because of slow boarding/disembarking passengers or airport traffic causing delays with landing and take-off. So wherever possible, opt for a ‘non-stop’ flight.

  1. Have the appropriate documents

If you are transiting another country, in addition to your destination visa, always ensure that you have the relevant transit documentation. If you do not, you will almost certainly be refused boarding.

  1. Double check your routing

Travel agents are human and they make mistakes. So make sure yours has booked you to fly to the correct city and airport. There is nothing worse than arriving at Heathrow, when your airport pick-up is waiting for you at Gatwick. While this is not as annoying as ending up in San Juan, when actually you wanted to go to San Jose – Oh yes, I have seen it happen – it’s an unnecessary inconvenience nonetheless.

  1. Check your tickets

Make sure that the name you used to book your ticket is identical to the one in your passport. This will avoid the inevitable stress and delay, while you are trying to convince the check-in agent at Guangzhou airport that Dick and Richard are actually the same person.

  1. Reserve your seat

It’s not always possible to reserve a seat prior to check in, but if an airline allows it – usually 24hrs before departure – it’s worth booking your seat in advance, either via the airline’s website or through your travel agent. Some may find SeatGuru useful for this task – it’s a great source of information, containing configurations for almost all aircraft types and comments/tips from fellow travellers. So if you like to know exactly where you’re sitting in relation to the plane’s wings, toilets, galley etc. – or, like me, you tend to spend hours searching for non-essential info on the net – it’s definitely worth a look.

  1. Allow yourself enough transit time

When transiting another city and your first flight is delayed, you may well miss your onward flight, especially in large busy airports where security is tight. But even if you run like a lunatic through the terminal and manage to make it to the plane in time, your luggage might not. So play it safe and allow extra time for delays, since an extra hour’s lay-over is less traumatic than spending the first half your holiday wearing the same clothes or having to overnight at the airport, waiting for the next day’s connection.

  1. Be nice

Finally, this may seem obvious, but many people don’t realise that ground staff and flight attendants will be more cooperative if they are courteous and polite. So if you would like an exit seat or you forgot to pre-order your low calorie, lacto-ovo vegetarian meal, approach the relevant person and ask them if they can assist. They are not obliged to help you, and may well flatly refuse, if you adopt and entitled or aggressive attitude.
